Not sure of the origins or the story behind this photo, but it started circulating today and it was the first I had ever seen or heard of it. It's obviously HR and Rollins, in what I would assume was a Bad Brains set that Henry came up and did guest vocals for. Pretty damn cool either way. If you've got any info on this, feel free to leave it in the comments section. -Tim DCXX

ReplyDelete"I remember that evening well, as I am both Henry Rollins and HR."
ReplyDeleteLOL
This is Hank Rollins here and I can tell you that HR was singing FVK when I just got up and stole the mic from him, as I've done with the Misfits, the Necros, and well basically with Black Flag, as well. You people have to get your heads out of your asses, it's 2011 and that sh*t was 30 years ago.
ReplyDeleteMy good friend David Jones has this to say:
ReplyDelete"My guess would be Ukranian Cultural Center. Guessing from a couple things – Henry’s hair length, that would put it early on, 81-82. Also the architecture and size looks like it could be the Ukranian. To my knowledge that Ukranian show was the first for the Bad Brains in LA. That’s the one from the classic Shawn Kerri flyer with the skeleton scooping out its brains. It was like “4 bad bands for 7 bad bucks” or something like that in the ad. Bad Religion played and Bad Posture from SF and maybe one other bad band.
I went to that gig but didn’t get in if it was that one. Jon Liu, Chris and I went but couldn’t get in as it was oversold and the Fire Marshall came. We were stuck outside trying to get in but the doors were closed. We didn’t know about the Fire Marshall inside. This guy Tony from the L.A.D.S started the bottle throwing outside. Every time I saw him just about he was involved in something that wasn’t good. The riot squad then came in on horseback on Melrose and they started tear mace-ing people (that guy Tony got it in the eyes/face and was one of the first victims) and wielding their batons. We scattered. We had gotten a ride there from this dude Wade from the valley that was a friend of one of my family friends and went to high school with Greg Graffin. He drove us all to Oki Dogs to chill out for awhile and escape the mayhem. We ended up going back about an hour or so later just to check it out. From the parking lot it seemed like it had all cooled off and as it turned out there was no door guy at the back door. At Wade’s prodding, he and Jon and Chris hopped the fence of the parking lot and ran through the back door. They made it in and saw the Bad Brains do “Pay To Cum” - their last song. I was last to hop the fence and as I was doing it I saw two cops start running towards me from across the street. They started yelling at me and as I landed one of them whipped out the night stick and smacked me in the solar plexus/chest area and I bounced back a few feet. They were saying “You better get your ass back over that fence right now or we’re going to beat the SHIT out of you!” Needless to say, even in my boots I hopped that fence in record time and ran as fast as I could up the street and away. That was probably the fastest I’ve ever run in my life. I wandered around up the street for a little while and then came back to the parking lot later to meet Jon Chris and Wade. I was pretty freaking jealous that they got to see “Pay to Cum” but then again I had a good story myself.
I got to see Bad Brains the next time around at Devonshire Downs in ‘82 and that is to this day in the top 5 concerts I’ve ever seen in my life. When they played “Pay to Cum” there, I swear the entire floor opened up and we were slamming across the whole room like side to side – it was like pinball. I’ve never seen that before or since. And that place held something like 1,500 people. It was a huge floor. The entire place was in motion. Never, ever seen anything like that.
So anyways, that’s my long-winded guess. I might be wrong, but I kind of think I’m correct. Could be Devonshire, but I sure don’t remember Henry coming up, and I don’t think his hair was that short at that time, and I don’t remember those arches there, and it was a bigger hall unless I’m thoroughly mistaken."
And he is correct. The arches match. That photo is indeed from their show at the Ukranian Cultural Center on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles.
Heros!
ReplyDeleteexcuse me but callin it 'black brains' sounds racist to me.
