Mouthpiece doing "True Till Death" with Curtis from Chain Of Strength

I'm out in Cali with Mouthpiece doing a handful of shows with Youth Of Today, but wanted to post this video from last night's show in Pomona, CA at the Glasshouse. With a little coordination I was able to get Chain front man, Curtis Canales out to the show to do guest vocals on our cover of Chain's "True Till Death". Here's what went down, thanks to Larry Ransom for shooting the video and getting it into my hands and thanks to Curtis for making it happen. -Tim DCXX

    ReplyDelete
  38. Clowns are comic performers stereotypically characterized by the grotesque image of the circus clown's colored wigs, stylistic makeup, outlandish costumes, unusually large footwear, and red nose, which evolved to project their actions to large audiences. Other less grotesque styles have also developed, including theatre, television, and film clowns. Peter Berger writes that "It seems plausible that folly and fools, like religion and magic, meet some deeply rooted needs in human society".[1] For this reason, clowning is often considered an important part of training as a physical performance discipline, partly because tricky subject matter can be dealt with, but also because it requires a high level of risk and play in the performer.[2]>> SOUNDS LIKE RAY OF TODAY???

  41. I can't believe that everyone is taking such issue with what was obviously a pretty awesome moment for the dudes in Mouthpiece. We don't come around to your place on Christmans morning and make fun of you when your mother gives you new Batman PJs, reminding you that when you were younger you used to say Superman was tops.

I don't think Curtis' problem is drinking beer, it is making music as a young man that others were going to hold him to for the rest of his life. The fact that some of you commenting here are still seeking moral guidance from teenage musicians from 20 years ago says more about you than it does of Curtis. Get a grip people.

That being said, so many of these comments give me cheese shivers. I mean seriously... if someone is going to throw their Mouthpiece records out because we had Curtis sing "True Till Death" with us, do me a favor and don't talk about it... do it. I'd rather a misdirected shit pipe like you didn't own the records that I put my time, effort, energy and heart into.

  49. Tim,

We all choose to practice our "edge" in different ways. I am not blamming you or Mouthpiece for having an edge breaker sing with the band. I still love Mouthpiece.

However I think for some of us, myself included "Straight Edge" is more then just an image, or something to do on a Friday night. It's a way of life. I am not saying I am better then you. I am saying though if I sang for a band, I would never have had an edge breaker, OR even somebody who wasn't "edge" share the stage with me and my band mates.

You may disagree, but like I stated before we all practice our "edge" in diffrent ways.

  52. XXX4LIFEXXX-
To each his own. My edge doesn't feel threatened or dishonored because I shared the stage with some one that may have moved on from it. I have great respect for those that came before me and laid the ground work for what I was to become and helped shape my band. Chain Of Strength and guys like Curtis were an inspiration to us and we felt like having him sing that song with us would be a cool tribute to the fact that 23 years ago, Chain Of Strength played their first show in their hometown of Pomona at the Yesteryears Club, that was originally planted just across the street from where we were at The Glasshouse in Pomona, with Youth Of Today. Now 23 years later, here we are, Mouthpiece, a band that was greatly influenced by Chain, playing with Youth Of Today, so it all seemed very fitting.

Unfortunately I think a lot of kids look at some of these guys from older bands, as mythological straight edge gods and tend to ignore or forget the fact that they are just normal people. By all accounts and from what I can gather, Curt is just a normal husband / father guy who still looks back very fondly on his days with Chain and hardcore in general. In my younger years I'll admit that I was disappointed when someone I respected would move on, but as I've grown older, I've learned that those people have already left their impression on me, whether or not they continued on the same path or not. Me being straight edge is all that really matters to me at this point. If you're a good person, you're a good person, straight edge or not and in my opinion, Curt is one of the good guys.

Oh and if straight edge was nothing more than an image to us or something to do on a Friday night, don't you think we would have left it behind a long time ago? In case you haven't noticed, as a band, Mouthpiece has only played together in an all straight edge line up. We're not one of those bands who just do it strictly for the "fun" of it. It still means everything to us and it's just as important to us today as it was 21 years ago when the band started. -Tim DCXX

  64. I totally understand that it was a spectacle to see Curt up on stage again, and it looked like it was a lot of fun. Although I don't know the guy, I'm sure he is a great person and not one of those people who bashed straight edge or went off the deep end once straight edge was no longer a part of his life.

Although I think this entire thread is hilarious and all in fun, I do think that there is a definite serious undertone to some of the comments. On one hand, some may think it weird that people think it's okay to be involved with straight edge, sing and write songs that are blatantly pro drug and alcohol free, yet de-associate with those particular beliefs, and then sing about beliefs which you know longer stand for years later. On the other hand, some may feel that it's not a big deal and that it is ridiculous to try and hold someone to a set of beliefs that a person believed in as an adolescent.

When someone de-associates with a set of beliefs that are a main component of a band and or its lyrical content, it becomes all about the spectacle and nothing about the beliefs behind the words.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hey Anonymous guess you gotta start breakin up that record collection. Sorry to break the news to ya but most of the edge bands of now and then hav gone dull.I wonder due you still have all that wax up on a shelf or in a box ? If so now that is a spectacle by youre standard.Lighten up! As for all the let downs by the bands that went dull it only makes my edge stronger. The words they spoke of in that time of their life still in my opinion apply in my life as being edge. Now that is karma...

    ReplyDelete
  66. I understand where those who feel let down and those who don't care get their perspective. I've been straight now for 23 years and it's never been an issue of self-discipline, pride or whatever for me. I truly believe that I found a better way that is characterised by certain ideals. Although I've never been in a fraternity or any other formal type of organisation, I do think that sXe shares components with them. I enjoyed the kinship of the music and belief system and when I've learned that someone who I may not have even known has turned away, a lot of that "kinship" goes with it. The reality is that most of us don't know Curtis as an individual, only by the words that he once sang. We now can only question how strong that "kinship" with him ever really was since we have nothing else to go by as far as truly knowing him. When he sang, "True 'till death", that really struck a chord with me and apparently a lot of other people. We internalised those words and now that the guy who sang and wrote them no longer embraces them, at least for me, I feel a little foolish for believing his conviction. Call it growing up, or moving on or whatever, the fact that remains is that his lyrics merely marked a phase in his life. For me, and I was there at the show (and really enjoyed the performance), I realised that it was just a performance and sXe was always more than that to me. When I had so little in common with my immediate surroundings, the music and the lyrics represented some degree of a "bond of friendship". Like all one-sided friendships, when one realises that he or she was the only one who was truly invested, it hurts, and that's what I think "the haters" are expressing here on this forum. Perhaps they/we feel embarrassed for believing that Curtis felt the same way we did and do.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hey anonymous, the issue is with performing, singing, and or playing something that you know longer stand by. As I said before, when the words are no longer stood by then it becomes just a performance, and or a spectacle. The issue has never been about turning your back on a person and or discarding their music due to their personal choice. Furthermore, the issue has never been that just because a person disassociates with a set of beliefs that what they created at one time looses any of its power.

The words they spoke are still important, but those words are no longer important to them, and because those words are no longer important them it becomes a spectacle and or just a performance.

No one needs to lighten up, it's just one mans opinion. No one's bashing anyone, just stating a respectful opinion. I thought the performance looked awesome and a lot of fun.

  70. Some of these idiots seem to think that they own the song Tue Till Death. He wrote the fucking thing and can sing it whenever the hell he wants.
Straight edge pride is nonsense. If any of you idiots told anyone outside the hardcore scene that you don't drink and do drugs people usually don't say much because it is obvious that these are destructive behaviors. "no man, I don't think you heard me, I don't drink or do drugs." "Yeah I get it." You want a pat on the back. Proud of things you don't do.
Maybe we should build a scene around people that don't rob banks or murder people.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think what's being lost in this conversation is a couple facts;

1)Straight Edge is a perosnal choice one makes to better there life, and rebel against society. It does make a person better then another, that's the whole point. That's what "Edge" means nunmbnuts. People who try to pretend they are "Edge" but still think it's ok if somebody else drinks or does drugs, are missing the whole point of the movement. I have a tat on my heart that says "FOREVER X" That sums it up for a lot of us. We're not "halfway crooks" if you know what I mean.

    2) People who stop being Straight Edge, really have no part being involved in the Straigt Edge scene. It was like this back when COS was playing shows, and it is like this now. I don't remember COS inviting say, Lemmy of Motorhead up on stage to sing TTD. Therefore nobody should be ass hurt that Straight Edgers are giving Moutpiece some grief for allowing a know "breaker" to sing words to an iconic Staright edge song.

    3) The haters on here, including the singer of Mouthpiece are not true edgemen. A true follower of the lifetyle, would not associate with a druggie, let alone allow him a moment on stage. A real straight edge band, would not embaress themselves by allowing a non-straightedger to sing a straight edge song.

Those are just facts, that can't be disputed. Like the gentleman said above "If you aren't now, you never were"

What a great, compelling argument you just made Eric. I think I'd rather smoke crystal meth then be associated with "edgemen" such as yourself. WTF is going on? When did Staright Edge get overtakken by Lamda Lamda Lamda?

    ReplyDelete
  73. "When someone de-associates with a set of beliefs that are a main component of a band and or its lyrical content, it becomes all about the spectacle and nothing about the beliefs behind the words."
Exactly, and hardcore is about music with a meaning. This "it means EVERYTHING!" Sorta takes away from the whole point of hardcore being about ideas and SPECIFIC ideas.
To the people that say "oh every band sells out" maybe every youth crew band did, but there are some bands that are still edge, look at Mouthpiece.

I for one am not saying Curtis has no right to sing the song, he wrote it, Tim and his band decided to have him sing it, more power to all of them.
Merely pointing out that Curtis is SINGING one thing and living another, is not any sort of militancy or whatever.

I'd say the same thing if the guys from Stryper began to sing songs about Satan, or Slayer began singing songs about doing their laundry.

What exactly does the following statement mean?

"That mentality may have worked during your time in the scene, but now it's our generations time"

I've never left the scene, this is no nostalgia trip for me. I'm hear, I live it and have lived it for 25 years now. Been straight edge for 23 years, never slipped up, never changed. I've stayed in touch with the scene, supported new bands, continued going to shows, all the way through. Don't believe me, I can probably find 300 people that will back me in about 15 minutes.

So exactly what "scene" am I missing and what "generation" am I out of touch with? Maybe the scene of "make-believe" in your teenage mind? Seriously, fill me in. -Tim DCXX

  87. @ Eric dudes like you are nothing unique to a specific generation. Back in my day you rolled 20 sided dice and used terms such as “Dungeon Master” to describe yourself. Today you call yourself an “Edgeman”. However it’s the same thing. Straight Edge stopped being cool before you were even born. Sorry you missed out.

    ReplyDelete
  88. On a totally separate note but related in a way. WTF is up with Outspoken reuniting with only 1 original member? That is just an awful idea. If any band should be embarrassed it’s not Mouthpiece for providing the crowd with a totally cool moment “Edge Breaker” or not, it’s fucking Outspoken the 2011 version. Hartsfield myst be hard up for money, attention, or both. Seriously if somebody can justify this I would love to hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Tim,

I don't consider you an enemy. I think you're misunderstanding me. I respect the older generation. Guys like you, Scott Vogel, and Ray Cappo paved the way for my generation of Straight Edge.

What I meant by my comment was when you were going to shows, it was easier to fit in. The whole scene was straight edge. Now a days we have to fight for our place in the scene. When we go to shows, there are drinkers, and people smoking grass. It's not has safe for us. Therefore your mentality of "you're still cool even if you're not edge" won't work in todays scene. Not when it's a war!

Also you may think you are part of the scene still, but you are really not. You seem like a decent person. The fact that you are still claming the "X" is something you should be proud of. You also did some good things. You helped start the movement, but were the ones now seeing it through till the end.

    "You talk about integrity
Then change your mind so easily
Fooled us once, but you can bet
The next time you come around you're going to get hit"

Lyrics not directed at Tim, but to the fakers, and 1/2 way crooks out there. The scene doesnt want you around anymore. Go Away!

You can not be a real person. However if you are real just know I am a fucking fan. Yes, yes I am an "edgebreaker", and I am sorry about that. I am also old, and I am sorry about that too.

I would also like to send you a free flip cam in the hope that if you are a real person you will film yourself, especially your MMA workouts.

    jnelsn@gmail.com is me

Email me your address and I'll send you a flip cam tomorrow. I also wold have no problem paying your travel expenses if you want to ever visit Los Angeles. In fact I would love to make a 30 minute documnetary of you in L.A. hanging with me, and some other breakers.

Hey don't hit me either! I want nothing to do with this punk ass bitch Eric. I disowned this fruit and his poor grammar meth mother as soon as she shit him out.

Eric you fucking putz, this is daddy, you are not only a joke but a fucking parody and a walking comedy and a douchebag to boot.

Can't tell you how many times this kid stuck 20 sided dice up his ass and had to go to the proctologist, I only know because I paid the bills while his mother sucked cock for crystal meth.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I'm immature? At least I am not some fat, old, washed up, no game, edge breaking loser. Coming at me with Dad, or Mom jokes. Pathetic. You guys deserve each other. Have fun spinning your Youth Of Today records, and talking about who was better back in the day 20 YEARS AGO Chain or YOT? HA HA HA. Losers!

Maybe next Summer another washed up old persons band will get back together for a "nostalga tour" , and you losers can all get excited about something in your pathetix lives again. Mouthpiece can even play too. Only if Tim can get the vacation days from his dead end job though. Got to pay the billz first right Timmy? We're not 35 anymore living at mom and dads anymore, HA HA HA. Loser!

Joe Nelson I am not interested in your offer. In case you haven't been paying attention dick cheese. We don't associate with "edge breakers" You loser! You 1/2 way crook!

"The sun beats down on the jet black streets.
The zero hour comes as the weak retreat

  116. You old fools. Check out my game, you 1/2 way crooks!

    War for the Edge:

We are gonna have a war
    A war for the edge
    Right after lunch
and I'm done trimming the hedge

We are gonna have a war
    But my parents grounded me
for making an X on my hand
    with their good sharpie

    Were gonna have a war
    We will fight until dawn
but it's gonna have to wait
    until I mow the lawn

    War for the edge
    Stand on a ledge
    Don't listen to Sister Sledge
    They weren't edge

    War for the edge
    a tofu meatball wedge
    Tra la la la la
    War for the edge

    We're taking it back
    if you have any doubts
    We'll take back the straightedge
    right after cub scouts!

    GO!!!!!!!!!

Got no time for readin or writin
Got no time for stinking books

I'm gonna buy some big pants
    I'm gonna X my hands
    I'm gonna do karate chops
    and really cool hand stands

Standing at the gates of Perdition
but the perdition store was closed
    When will perdition open again
    no one really knows

    Drink your beer
    You're a queer
    Live in fear
    The end is near

    ReplyDelete
  122. Eric - layoff Mobb Deep lyrics. They drink, smoke mad chronic. Not cool for edgeman to quote... Your edge credentials are at risk.

    ReplyDelete
  123. 133 comments, all devoted to this nonsense, while 0 comments devoted to other posts on here, which have solid, important contact. Has the edge gone dull? I would say, yes!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Just named my band Halfway Crooks.
Trying to get on This is Hardcore.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Hey Nelson, where were all these super edge kids back in the Fenders days. Back when it was the LADS and 5 straight edge kids. Back when there was something to fight for and stand up against. This takes preaching to the choir to a whole new level. This is why I am no longer involved. To sit and criticise Tim or Nelson at this point is ridiculous. Those two have done more for this scene than everyone else on this post combined.

Just remember who paved the roads you are all walking on.

    ReplyDelete
  126. A few things reading the last 100 odd posts have confirmed:

Yes, Ken Olden does look stupid in his visor.

If Eric is real, he is Karl Crisis' illegit love child when they went thru the 'nu metal' phase surely.

I have absolutely no clue on hardcore kids or bands from the last 5 or 6 years.

Mouthpiece are still one of the best hardcore bands of the last 2 decades

  127. THE PRIDE

    nobody is really that stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Wow.....guess I'm too old and "edge broken".....but Chain was a fun band the 3 or 4 times I saw em.....Why hate 20 years later?

    ReplyDelete
  130. No one is hating, at least I'm not. I don't hold anything against Mouthpiece, or Curt. I'm just saying plain and simple that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a person to sing about a set of beliefs that a person no longer practices.

Again, it's not a big deal, but when you stop and think about it, getting up on stage, or being in any public forum and participating in something that you no longer stand for can be a little hard to swallow.

In this case, it was all for fun and show, I understand that. I'm not hating, just stating what makes sense and what doesn't. It was good see people having fun, and I bet it was a cool experience for the Mouthpiece guys. Again, no hate on anyone here, just stating an opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  131. eric, with out a doubt is tony papalardo..fact

    ReplyDelete
  132. That's not how you spell my name and no one remotely cool calls me Tony (fact). I love that this thing has spiraled so far out of control that I'm being dragged into it! Best comments ever.

If you thought before you posted unfunny things you'd realize I have gone out of my way to praise Chain and Tim and MP were in Radio Silence.

This thread is kind of incredible in that no one knows what is real, sarcastic or funny because the "controversial dudez" aren't coherent, humorous or able to form sentences.

Mobb Deep flopped and are snitches.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I wish someone would rock this dude eric in the face and stab his brain with his nose bone.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Henceforth, I shall be know as Edge-ic.

    - Edge-ic (formerly Eric)

    ReplyDelete
  135. People using band lyrics to get their point across in this thread is hysterical to me. No opinion of your own? No wonder there's pictures of sheep on the Minor Threat album.

Calling edge-breakers "junkies" is even funnier.

    Great thread.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Actually, I wanna be Darth Edger instead.

Don't you worry though you dicksuckers, you faggots, you fakers, you once wasers, or more like neverwheres. Straight Edge is coming back thanks to me, and my crew. The New Generation is here. The BEST generation is now on the premises.

I named my 7" "Standing At Gates Of Perdition" because you old slobs have pushed the movement I love so passionatly , so feverishly to the brink of the abyss. Your Lazy, "no big deal, he's cool" ways have nearly damned us all. If i ever see you on the streets X'd up you can bet your size 40 dockers I am carving that shit right off your fucking hand. None of you deserve to wear it anymore. Your time is over.

The New School is in session now, ALL edge breaakers, and fake straight edge pretenders, take notes.

All you Eastcoasters can take a deep breath. You're safe for now. However when The Pride finally tours, you can bet your faggot asses I won't tolerate your weakass shit at our shows. That goes for the whole New Jersey Scene! Cause the Sun now rises in the West MUTHA FUCKERS!!!!

Anyway if you are remotely serious, or can help in recording us. The number for Chad my bass player is (202)448-8881. He's in charge of the buisness aspect for The Pride. We can record by August latest I'd say.

You old faggots have no idea how easily I'd fuck you all up. It's amusing how you hide behind fake names, and try and intimidate me. The sad part is, you all call yourselves "Straight Edge". News Flash - NONE OF YOU ARE!! Oh sure you may refrain from drinking, smoking, eating meat, or taking drugs. However you don't have the X'S back. You are 1/2 way crooks, and pretenders to the scene.

THE SUN IS RISING IN THE WEST !!The days of your lame 80's and 90's shitty, and I mean SHITTY bands glory is darkening to a jet black. Toa DEATH BALCK!!! I am coming for you all, I am coming to destroy the Edge breakers, and their sympathisers. ITS WAR FOR THE EDGE, and when the dust settles straight edge will finally have it's day! GLORY GLORY!!!!

In fact, we need to form some kind of SXE council that regulates which songs from the past can be sung. Edgemen. wow. you should be so proud of yourselves. And yes please post a picture of your "forever 21" tattoo. It sounds really special. And I'm sure the tattoo artist who gave you your killer "tat" was pissing his pants the whole time he was doing it. A bunch of anonymous pussies around here....
